Feed of the Day: USGS Earthquake feeds

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

The US Geological Service publishes several earthquake related feeds that include longitude and latitude data, making it easy to integrate them with map APIs without having to do any extra geocoding work. I’ve selected one that includes small maps of the affected region right within the feed as today’s Feed of the Day. Clicking through to the feed item’s Web page reveals a larger map and a table of additional data.

If you look inside this RSS feed you will see that the latitude and longitude are being recorded with the <geo:lat> and <geo:lon> tags. I haven’t seen these tags before, and in the process of researching them I found all types of interesting geocoding stuff, like the  Geobloggers blog. I had to force myself to stop at this point, or else I’d still be exploring this rich area.
